Hi, I’m Nikki Key and you’re watching the Daily Idea.
Flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, and warm weather is returning…which means you need to get into shape for the summer. After hibernating all winter, you don’t want to head to the beach looking like this.
You already know the two things you have to do to get in summer shape – exercise and eat healthier. We don’t want to overwhelm you, so we’ll just focus on the latter today. Thanks to our friends at zenhabits.net, we have some simple things you can do to eat healthier and look hot in your bathing suit.
Let’s start with the beginning of your day. Most of us need a pick-me up to start the morning. But a breakfast of Lucky Charms covered in whole milk and finished off with a Mountain Dew is a little much. But instead of going cold turkey, why not start by switching from that sugary cereal to some whole grain cereal. Try that for a week. Then switch from whole milk to 2% then down to 1%. And if you are feeling crazy…try soy milk. Oh, and quit drinking sodas for breakfast. Didn’t your mom tell you not to do that?
Next is lunch. Going out to eat with your co-workers all the time can lead to some bad habits. You order the cheese fries as appetizers and then order the sandwich on white bread with chips as your side. This is not helping your cause. Instead of ordering the white bread, get wheat. And replace the chips with some type of fresh vegetable. And if you are tempted by those cheese fries, just keep thinking positive. Like, “I’m positive my co-workers will be fatter than me.”
Now for that mid-afternoon snack. You know that junk drawer you have filled with Twinkies, Ho-Hos, and Ding-Dongs? Well…I have a secret to tell you…that’s not very healthy. So empty that drawer and replace those unhealthy items with healthy ones. Instead of Twinkies try unsalted peanuts or raw almonds. Try fruit cups instead of Ho-Hos. And replace those Ding-Dongs with fresh apples.
And the last meal of the day is dinner. Whether you cook at home or go out to eat, you can make healthy choices when it comes to this meal. Just by adding fresh vegetables as your sides will help considerably. Also, cut down on your in-take of red meat by substituting fish or chicken as your entrée. Learn about healthy portions for your meals. Eat just one piece of fish instead of two. Get one spoonful of green beans instead of two. Take only one trip to the buffet instead of nine.
Remember, this is a journey. You don’t have to implement all these steps at once. In fact, I would suggest only trying one or two at first. Work your way into this lifestyle and don’t burn yourself out.
And if you have trouble with eating healthier…remember this guy…
And that’s another Daily Idea.
