Going Green: Why Recyling Isn’t Enough

October 29th, 2007 Posted in Environment

So, you separate your bottles, put your newspapers on the curb and you think you’re saving the environment. While that’s a good start at being green, you’re not quite there. You may not be able to save the world, but you can start doing your part.

Hi, I’m Nikki Key and you’re watching The Daily Idea.

If someone asked you what the three R’s rule was, would you know it? The answer is Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. So, you separate your bottles, put your newspapers on the curb and you think you’re saving the environment. Would it surprise you to know that while you’ve made a good start at being green … you’re not quite there. Not even chartreuse. More like a burnt sienna.

Well, that’s where the Daily Idea can help. Here are some easy ways to add those other two R’s to the equation and not just recycle, but be a true friend of the environment.

The three R’s are actually written in order, by importance. The first one is reduce. Did you know that if you refill your plastic water bottle instead of buying three or four, over the course of a year, you’ll pee a lot. Actually, you’ll keep enough water bottles out of landfills to cover every inch of floor in a 1,500 square foot house.

The second R is reuse. What’s the point of sending cans, bottles and papers off to be recycled, if you just go out and buy all new paper, plastic and aluminum to add to the system. Insist on buying recycled products. You can find high recycled content in everything from printer paper to office chairs, not to mention Uncle Bob’s wardrobe.

And even though you might be putting the cans and bottles on the curb every week, we could all do a little better job with the third R — Recycle. Consider investing in rearranging your plumbing to have wastewater from your shower or tub used to flush your toilet. If you have a garden, water it with leftover water from the bathtub or dishwasher. Instead of bagging your grass and leaves, find a neighbor with a compost pile for gardening.

Oh, and when your computer gives out because you can’t get enough Daily Idea … donate it to a non-profit organization that rehabilitates computers for schools or the elderly.

There are tons more ideas out there on the Internet to help you Reduce, Reuse and Recycle a little better. You’ll find a handful of links on our site at dailyidea.tv, so come on over and check ‘em out.

Just be sure to pee first.

And that’s another Daily Idea.

Recycle, help the environment and make some money at the same time. Perhaps you just upgraded your old CRT TV with a flat panel one; what do you do with the old one if you don’t know anyone who wants it? It is too big and heavy to post to someone on eBay. You could dump it but that is a waste right, it is still a good TV. Instead, list it on Scoodi. It cost nothing and is local. Someone in your neighbourhood will be happy to come buy and take the TV off your hands. You may just make yourself some spare cash to boot. With that done now it is time to spring-clean your garage.
